The 'Siberian Ecological Center' was an initiative group of nature conservationists of Southern Siberia. Among the center’s projects were programs for the conservation of forests, for the protection and monitoring of steppe ecosystems, a consulting service for environmental protection for residents of Novosibirsk, and many others.

A statement of the Ministry of Justice indicates that the organisation was recognised as a 'foreign agent' based on an unplanned on-site inspection. According to the head of the organisation, its political activity was seen in the reprint of the materials concerning Greenpeace activists detained at the Prirazlomnaya oil platform. The organisation received funds under several international programs, in particular, under the UN development program through the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation.
