'The Citizens' Rights Protection Fund' was established in July 2020 as a new legal entity of Alexey Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Fund (ACF). The name change was related to the court decision regarding the claim of the 'Moscow Schoolboy' company, which FBK associated with Yevgeny Prigozhin.

In the summer of 2021, the 'Citizens' Rights Protection Fund' and the 'Anti-Corruption Fund' were recognized as extremist organizations and banned in Russia.
