The Altai eco-organisation 'Arkhar' was established in 2004. Its main task was to preserve rare and endangered animal species of the Altai Mountains and adjacent territories (first of all, the snow leopard and argali). The head of 'Arkhar' was a well-known ecologist Sergey Spitsyn.
